Tom Schieffer To Consider Run for Texas Governor
Highly respected Democrat to announce formation
of exploratory committee today
Although the 2010 primary is still a year from today, some pundits had already
suggested that capable, credible Texas leaders were unwilling to consider seeking
the Democratic nomination for Governor. Those concerns should be set aside at
11:00 a.m. this morning, when former State Representative, successful businessman
and U.S Ambassador to both Australia and Japan, Tom Schieffer, will announce
from the State Capitol that he is formally filing papers to explore a run for
Texas Governor. Schieffer’s announcement comes shortly after State Senator
Leticia Van de Putte (SD 26, San Antonio) said she is considering seeking statewide
office as well.
Tom Schieffer served in the Texas State House as a very young man representing a Fort Worth based District in the 1970’s. After leaving the House, he became a successful businessman and, during the 1990’s, served as President of the Texas Rangers, leading the management team that built the “Ball Park in Arlington,” home of the Rangers and one of our nation’s premier sports venues.
Schieffer was asked by George W. Bush to serve as ambassador to first Australia and then later Japan. He completed successful foreign service in both countries, all the while remaining true to his Democratic roots. In fact, records show that Schieffer voted in the last four Texas Democratic Primaries, even while serving overseas.
Comments from Lone Star Project Director, Matt Angle:
"Tom Schieffer is a serious-minded problem solver who has the ability to unite our state and tackle the enormous problems caused by failed one party Republican control in Texas. Should he ultimately decide to run, Tom Schieffer will be a very strong candidate capable of defeating Rick Perry or Kay Bailey Hutchison."
“Texas Governor is too important a job to be left to failed Republicans with nothing else to do. Rick Perry has worn out his welcome, and Kay Bailey Hutchison is just worn out."
"The fact that highly respected and capable Democrats like Tom Schieffer, Leticia Van de Putte and others are considering seeking high statewide office in Texas shows that Democrats have become the mainstream party that reflects the sensible views of most Texans. Meanwhile, Texas Republican leaders have become overtly partisan, harshly negative and highly ineffective."
